Growing Up (2009/10)

.....'when I grow up, will run across Africa and enter a race with a Cheetah and a Jaguar and I would win’ Jaheim (who wants to be the fastest runner in the world)

Funded by Liverpool City Council as part of Liverpool’s Year of the Environment the ‘Growing up’ project engaged young people from PSS Toy Library in exploring aspirations for their future selves and planting actual seeds for future growth.

Participants considered the question ‘What will I do when I grow up...?’ Theatre practitioner Keith Saha from theatre company 20 Stories High, led workshops in which children imagined and acted out their roles in these future environments. The mimes and role-play were recorded photographically by photographer Leila Romaya and then animated with the children’s cartoon drawings.

Squash art gardeners Kate Brennan and Becky Vipond worked with the children to create decorative pots of abundant herbs for the centres garden and to take home.

The 'Growing Up' exhibititon of the 30 artworks took place at Liverpool John Moores Design Academy between November 2009 and January 2010

The resulting, heart-warming works are a real celebration of what growing up means to these young people:

Suzanne would like to be an artist

Isaac wants to be a story-teller

Thomas is going to be a collector of toys

Caitlin would like to be a cat and a princess
